The problem could be the thermostat. Most of the time, poor readings or improper location can cause this. Another cause could be a dirty air filter. Dirty air filters prevent airflow from the AC system and could be the culprit behind short cycling and other symptoms. Make sure to change your filter every three months and call a professional if the filter is dirty or has lost its efficiency. A dirty air filter can also result in the AC unit overheating and blowing hot air.

Another common cause of short cycling is a malfunctioning thermostat. The thermostat regulates the temperature in your entire home. If the thermostat is broken or has low batteries, it can short cycle your AC frequently. As a result, the AC will turn on and off intermittently. Once the battery power is back, the thermostat can be reset and your AC will resume normal operation. This fix is fairly easy and can be done yourself without the assistance of a professional.
